Wheels

Wheels are the upgrade you feel immediately. They change how a bike accelerates, how it holds a line in a crosswind and how it feels on a climb. Unlike most upgrades they also move across to the next frame when the time comes, which makes them one of the few things worth spending properly on.

Rim depth is the main decision. Shallow rims are lighter, climb better and are far less bothered by a side wind, which matters on an exposed road. Deep sections are quicker on the flat and in a group. Somewhere between 35 and 50mm covers most riders for most of what they do.

Weight gets the attention, but a wheel that stays true and stiff under load is worth more over a season than a hundred grams. Hub quality and spoke count decide that, and they also decide whether the wheel can be rebuilt in five years or simply thrown away.

Check compatibility before you commit. Brake type, axle standard, freehub body and rotor fitting all have to match the bike, disc and rim brake wheels are not interchangeable, and freehub bodies differ between the major groupset makers.
