Tyres change how a bike feels more than almost any other upgrade, and they are one of the cheapest ways to transform a ride you already own.

Width is the first decision. Wider tyres at lower pressure are faster over real road surfaces than the narrow, rock-hard setups of a decade ago, and they are far more comfortable, just check what your frame and brakes will clear before you size up.

After that it is a trade-off between speed and protection. A supple, high-TPI casing rolls beautifully and cuts easily; a reinforced belt costs a few watts and saves you standing at the roadside in the dark.
