Argon 18

A small Canadian outfit from Montreal, started in 1989 by the racer Gervais Rioux once he had stopped competing. The name comes from argon, element eighteen, the inert gas that shields a weld from the air. It is an engineer's joke, and it tells you most of what you need to know about the brand. Argon 18 have never been the obvious name in a shop window, which is part of why people who buy one tend to have owned the obvious ones first.

On the road the Krypton is the endurance frame, built around comfort over a long day rather than outright stiffness, with the tyre clearance that Scottish roads quietly demand. The Nitrogen and the Equation cover the faster end of the range.

Gravel is the Matter family. Dark Matter, Grey Matter and Anti Matter share a name and a way of thinking, and between them they run from a drop bar bike you could load up and disappear on to something much closer to a race bike. Builds come with SRAM XPLR or Shimano GRX.
