A thin skull cap under a helmet is one of the best value pieces of winter kit there is. Almost no bulk, fits under any helmet, and it covers the ears, which is where the cold actually gets you.

A cotton cap with the peak down keeps rain off your glasses, and with the peak up it is what you wear at the cafe. Both are legitimate uses.
