Direct-drive trainers replace the rear wheel, which makes them quieter, more accurate and better for structured training, and they measure power without a separate meter. Wheel-on trainers are cheaper and quicker to set up and take down.

Smart trainers pair with Zwift and similar apps to adjust resistance automatically as the road tilts. You will also want a mat, a fan and a towel. There is considerably more sweat than you expect.
