The right jacket is the one that matches the weather you actually ride in, which around here usually means wind and persistent drizzle rather than a downpour.

Fully waterproof shells keep everything out but need decent venting or you get wet from the inside instead. Softshells and windproofs breathe far better and shrug off light rain, and for most Scottish riding they are the more useful garment.

Look for a cycling cut: longer at the back, shorter at the front, arms cut for a reach to the bars. A walking jacket rides up and flaps.
