Bags and Panniers

Carrying weight on the bike rather than on your back makes a real difference on anything longer than a short commute: cooler, more comfortable, and far easier on your shoulders.

Panniers on a rack carry the most and keep the weight low, which is what you want for commuting and touring. Bikepacking bags strap directly to the frame, bars and saddle, so they suit bikes with no mounts and rougher ground.

In Scotland, waterproof is not optional. Look for welded seams and roll-top closures rather than a zip and a rain cover. The difference shows up the first time you ride home in a downpour.
