Decide first whether you want navigation. Mapping units are bigger and cost more, but following a route on the screen beats stopping at every junction with a phone. If you only want speed, distance and a record of where you have been, a smaller unit does that for far less.

Check battery life against your longest day, and make sure the mount suits your bars. Most units pair with heart rate straps and power meters over ANT+ or Bluetooth.
