Padded or unpadded is the first decision. Padded tights replace your shorts on winter rides. Unpadded go over bib shorts, which means you can wash the pad more often and keep using the shorts you already like.

Cold joints under load are genuinely worth avoiding, and most riders find anything below about twelve degrees is the point to cover the knees. A thermal fleece lining and a wind-resistant front panel matter more than outright thickness.
