Flat bars, an upright position and a motor that takes the sting out of the hills. An electric hybrid is the one that gets people commuting who had written off cycling, because it removes the two objections that actually stop them, arriving sweaty and the climb on the way home.

Gazelle are the mainstay of what we keep in stock. Dutch built, Bosch powered, with hub gears, lights and a rack as standard, and designed for a country where a bike is transport rather than a hobby. The Medeo is the practical all-rounder, the Grenoble and Paris are the quieter hub-geared versions, and the Ultimate is the quickest of them.

We also supply estarli to order, including the eCargo longtail if you need to carry children or a shop. They are endlessly customisable on accessories and build, so those are easier to sort out by phone, email or live chat than through a product page.

Assistance is capped at 15.5mph under UK law, with no licence or insurance needed, and the motor only helps while you pedal. On battery size, 400Wh covers a normal commute for most of a week and 540Wh or more covers a long day out, though the honest answer depends on your route.
