An e-bike only helps while you pedal. It takes the edge off a headwind, a hill or a heavy load, which in practice means you ride more often and arrive in a fit state to do something else. For getting across a city built on drumlins, that is the whole argument. We have kept the range small and stick to brands we can service properly.

Gazelle are the city and touring side of it. Dutch built, Bosch powered, with hub gears, lights and a rack as standard, made for daily use in weather. The Scott Fastlane is the other end, an electric road bike that looks and rides like a road bike, with enough assistance to keep you with the Sunday group on the climbs.

Range is the question everyone asks and the hardest to answer honestly, because it depends on the hills, your weight, the wind and which assist level you use. As a rough guide a 400Wh battery covers a normal commute for most of a week, and 540Wh or more covers a long day out. We would rather talk through your actual route than quote a number off a box. UK law limits assistance to 15.5mph, with no licence or insurance needed.

Servicing is where an e-bike differs most from a normal bike. Drivetrains wear faster under the extra power, and batteries and firmware occasionally need a shop with the right tools. Buying somewhere you can go back to is worth more here than on anything else we sell.
