Grips

Along with the saddle and the pedals, one of three places you actually touch the bike. Hands that go numb on a long ride are almost always the grips, and that is a twenty minute fix rather than a new bike.

Shape is what matters. A round grip puts most of your upper body weight through a small patch at the base of the palm, which is exactly where the ulnar nerve runs close to the surface. A winged grip spreads that load over a wider area and holds the wrist straighter, which is why they turn up on almost every touring and hybrid bike built with comfort in mind.

Bar ends give you somewhere else to put your hands. On a long climb, or an hour of flat towpath, being able to change position is worth more than any amount of extra padding.

Size counts too. Your hand should not wrap the whole way round the grip, so a wider one suits a bigger hand and a slimmer one suits a smaller hand. Most ergonomic grips come in two widths for that reason. If you are between them, come in and hold both.

Fitting takes minutes. Most clamp on with a single bolt and we will swap them while you wait. Come into the shop at 176 Saltmarket or ring us on 0141 552 0841.
