Side-entry cages are the answer on small frames and full-suspension bikes where there is not enough room to lift a bottle straight out. Carbon and composite cages save a few grams; a good plastic one grips well and survives being dropped.

Insulated bottles keep a drink cold for a couple of hours in summer and stop it freezing solid in January — more useful here than you might think.
