Lenses are rated by filter category, from 0 (clear) through to 3 (bright sun), alongside a VLT figure, the percentage of light the lens lets through. The lower the number, the darker the lens. Photochromic lenses shift between two figures as the light changes, which makes them the most versatile choice for Scottish weather.
Fit matters as much as tint: a frame that stays put over rough surfaces, venting that keeps the lens clear when the pace drops, and enough coverage to protect your eyes when you're low on the drops.
