Locks

In a city, the lock is the difference between leaving the bike and worrying about it. Budget roughly a tenth of what the bike is worth, and more if it lives outside.

Look for a Sold Secure rating rather than a marketing claim, Gold or Diamond for anything valuable, Silver as a minimum. Most insurers ask for a specific rating, so check your policy before you buy.

Technique matters as much as the lock. Go through the frame and a wheel, fix it to something genuinely immovable, keep the lock off the ground and fill the shackle so there is no room to lever it.
