The Fastlane is an electric road bike that does not look like one. The down tube is slim, the motor is hidden between the cranks, and there is no display or remote cluttering the bars. Most people have to look twice. It shares its geometry with the Addict, so it rides like a road bike rather than like an e-bike, right up until the road tilts upwards and you get a quiet shove in the back.

The drive unit. TQ's HPR40 is lighter and more compact than the generation before it, and the pedalling feel is close enough to a normal bike that you stop thinking about it. It is also remarkably quiet, which matters more than people expect on a bike you ride in company.

The battery. 290Wh, hidden in the frame, which is plenty for a long day. Above 25km/h the motor disengages smoothly and you are simply riding a light road bike, so the charge goes on the climbs where you actually want it rather than on the flat where you do not.

Charging and range. Three hours to full. The TQ charger is small enough to live in a Syncros IS Road frame bag, and there is a 160Wh range extender if you are planning something ambitious.

Who is it for? Riders coming back from injury, riders whose regular group has got quicker, riders with a commute that includes a hill they have started to dread, and riders who simply want to cover more ground on a Sunday. None of which shows on the bike.
