Whyte are a British company who have been building mountain bikes for over twenty years, and they design for the conditions we actually ride in rather than for a Californian summer. Comfort, agility and handling come first, which is why their hardtails have been a shop favourite for years and why several of us have owned one.

The 900 series of enduro hardtails is the one that built the reputation here. Long, slack and low, with a spec list that means business, and tough enough to keep up with bikes costing a good deal more. The 429 has been the other way in, a 29er hardtail that thrives on the trails but rolls fast enough to work as an all-rounder.

The Secta 26 MX carries the same thinking into a kids mountain bike, built properly rather than as a scaled-down toy, which matters more than most people expect on a bike a child has to lift and throw around.
