Against the clock, position is everything. A time trial bike puts you lower and narrower than a road bike, and holds you there comfortably enough to hold the effort.

The frame is only part of it. Aero tube shapes, integrated cockpits and deep wheels all help, but the biggest single gain is a position you can actually sustain for the full distance without falling apart.
