Wheel-on trainers are cheaper and quicker to set up and take down, which suits a flat where the bike cannot live on a trainer all season. Direct-drive units replace the rear wheel and are quieter, more accurate and better for structured work.

You will want a mat, a fan and a towel. The fan is not optional, and there is considerably more sweat involved than anyone expects the first time.
