Shimano invented SPD, which is why a two bolt cleat pattern is cut into the sole of almost every mountain bike, gravel and commuting shoe made since.

The two systems split by use. SPD-SL is the road platform, a wide three bolt cleat, stiff and efficient and awkward to walk in. SPD recesses into the sole so you can get off and walk about, which is why it suits gravel, touring and the commute.

What we cover here is pedals, from entry level up to Dura-Ace. If you are not sure which system your shoes take, bring them in and we will look.
