These are flat pedals, which means no cleats, no special shoes and no learning to unclip. For mountain biking, commuting or anyone who simply does not want to be attached to the bike, they are the sensible answer.

The pins are what give the grip, and they are replaceable, which is the point. A flat pedal that has been through a rock garden can be brought back with a few new pins rather than replaced.
