Gravel bikes make unusually good commuters, and this is the kit that turns one into a bike you ride to work all year. Guards, a rack, panniers, and enough puncture protection that a canal path in February does not become a walk.

A gravel bike already has clearance for a wide tyre and usually the mounts for a rack and full-length guards, which makes it a better winter commuter than a good many bikes actually sold as commuters.

Carry the weight on the bike rather than on your back. Panniers on a rack are cooler, more comfortable and considerably easier on your shoulders and hands once the commute is more than a mile or two.

If you ride gravel for pace rather than for transport, the race side of the range trades the carrying capacity for speed.
