Road Bikes

Modern road bikes split into two useful camps. Race bikes are aerodynamic and stiff, with a low front end and clearance for a 30 to 34mm tyre. Endurance bikes share most of the same carbon and most of the same speed, but sit you a little higher and take a wider tyre. The gap between them narrows every year, which is good news if you were worried that comfort meant slow. For most riders on Scottish roads, endurance is the honest answer, and it is the bigger part of our range.

Five ranges make up the bulk of it. Pinarello for the Dogma and the F and X Series, Cervélo for the S5, R5, Soloist and Caledonia, Scott for the Foil and Addict, Merida for Reacto and Scultura at sensible money, and Argon 18, which is quietly very good and not enough people know it.

On groupsets, 105 and Rival do the same job as Dura-Ace and RED with a little more weight. Electronic shifting has come down the range far enough that 105 Di2 is a normal starting point. Wheels, not groupsets, are usually where an upgrade is felt first. On tyres, 28mm is the new 25, and wider tyres at lower pressure are faster on a real road surface as well as more comfortable.
